Spider veins are unsightly red, blue, or purple veins that appear to twist around and are easily visible at the surface of the skin. They are most common on the legs, nose, and cheeks, and are caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Standing for long periods of time
- Family history of spider veins
- Sun exposure
- Injury to the area
When blood travels through the veins, it is working to get pushed back up to the heart by way of valves in each vein. If there is pressure put on those veins for an extended period of time (like standing or being pregnant), the blood backs up and makes the valves weaker creating the appearance of spider veins.
How does Spider Vein Treatment Work?
There are a few different methods for spider vein removal.
With laser removal of spider veins, a laser is used to transmit heat to the affected veins while leaving the skin and surrounding tissue unaffected. This causes the blood within the spider vein to coagulate, collapsing and sealing the vein. Several weeks after the laser treatments, spider veins will disappear completely.
Sclerotherapy involves injecting a saline solution (salt solution) into the spider vein, irritating the vein and causing it to collapse and the blood within it to clot. Over a period of time, that collapsed vein turns into scar tissue and disappears from view.
Does Spider Vein Removal Hurt?
Laser spider vein removal. Sclerotherapy has a mild amount of pain associated with the injection of the saline solution, and you may experience some cramping in the area for 1-2 minutes after the area is injected. Side effects are minimal, and there is no downtime. With laser therapy, you may experience some mild redness or swelling, but that goes away 1-3 days after treatment is completed.
Is There Anyone Who Can’t Have Spider Vein Removal Treatment?
If you are pregnant, you cannot have spider vein treatment until after you give birth. People with a history of blood clots are considered for spider vein removal on a case-by-case basis, be sure to schedule your free in-office consultation to see if you are a good candidate.
